There are now 2 cruise ship piers in the area, with the newest being Wilderness Landing pier at Icy Strait , opened in August 2021. Cruise ships refer to the name "Icy Straight " when talking about visiting the town of Hoonah, Alaska, although that is the dock area and not the actual town.
Now that cruising has nearly reached pre-pandemic levels, and Hoonah now being visited by more ships arriving at the new dock, over 400,000 cruise ship passengers are expected in 2023.
Captain Josh wants to remind cruise ship visitors that although the cruise lines offer shore excursions through their own onboard excursion desks, many passengers may prefer to join us on our smaller boat to get a more personalized whale watching experience.
We also offer the same guarantees as the cruise ships - yes you can get your money back if something unexpected happens:
When my husband and I cruised to Icy Straight , he bought me a whale watching excursion with Captain Josh as an anniversary gift. I had seen humpback whales from a distance before while on larger tour boats, but whale watching with Captain Josh was the most awe-inspiring tour I have ever had! Not only did we see several humpbacks, the smaller tour boat had a flexible itinerary so the Captain was able to run over to an area where orca sightings had just been announced! Seeing these absolutely stunning creatures for the first time in such a natural habitat was an incredible experience. Thank you Captain Josh for going out of your way to provide your customers with a thrill they will never forget!
