These magnificent creatures are highly mobile, covering over a hundred miles a day at times
Orca are carnivore mammals who travel in pods. They have an average life span of 50 to 80 years in the wild and usually range from 23 to 32 feet. They can weigh up to 6 tons.
Orca are our favorite creatures in our waters, and Captain Josh will drive for a long distance to see them! Their behavior on the surface is typically very dignified, with the orca coming up, breathing, and then diving again, but from our overhead view with the drones, a great deal of their underwater behavior is visible! Orca swimming upside down, or on their sides, Orca hunting marine mammals, Orca catching salmon, harassing Humpbacks, and more!>
Because of their speed and travel patterns, and the fact that we are only a small part of that wide range, we typically only see them about ten percent of the time, but they are worth the effort to pursue!
